#Week 14: Matthew the Tax Man | Children@Apostles
This week we are beginning a series of stories about people who met Jesus and how their lives were changed by it. Here we are learning about Matthew, who became one of the Holy Apostles. At our zoom session we will learn about a man called Zacchaeus. Both of these men did the same job but they met Jesus in different ways, and in different places. They both became very different men by meeting Jesus. That’s because Jesus changes lives, and He will change our lives too if we let Him! There are some bonus questions about the story, and anyone who answers them, and posts them on the comments on our Facebook page or HA virtual Cafe will get a bonus point for each right answer. Remember you get 5 points for any activity you do. Have fun with our story and activities and we will see you soon.
Read Matthew 9:9-13 or watch the story here:
1. What was the name of the tax collector Jesus called to be His disciple?
2. What is a tax collector?
3. Who did Matthew invite to his home for dinner?
4. Why did the religious leaders criticise Jesus?
5. Jesus responded that He came to earth to do what?
3 Things to think about
1. How do you think Matthew felt when Jesus wanted to be his friend?
2. Do you think the Pharisees were surprised when Jesus told then off? Why?
3. Why do you think Matthew decided to follow Jesus?
Our new song for this term:
Here is a song about welcoming everyone:
1: Make A Money Box
What you need: pringles or similar stacking crisps, modge-podge or P.V.A, glue, paper to cover the pringles box, decorations, sponge or sponge paint brush.
Notes: Eat the crisps…. this is really important! Also, the instructions suggest using modge-podge but if you don’t have any (it’s expensive) use a mix of equal parts white glue and water, it’s basically the same thing and cheap. I would think about 1 dessert spoon of each would be enough.
Follow the instructions here: http://www.jenniferpwilliams.com/…/pinterest-inspired-up-cy…
2: Ice Cream Cone Cakes
Matthew gave a big party for his friends and no party is complete without a great dessert so why not make these cakes for your family?
What you need: a 12-hole muffin tin, 12 flat-bottomed ice cream cones, 200g softened butter, 200g plain flour, 4 tbsp custard powder, 1 tsp vanilla paste with seeds, 200g golden caster sugar, 2 large eggs, beaten to decorate 350g butter, softened 350g icing sugar, sifted, 2 tsp vanilla extract sprinkles, wafers, chocolate, glacé cherries, sauces - whatever you like on ice cream!
What to do: get the recipe by following this link https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipe/ice-cream-cone-cakes

Fun Fact- In the 1700’s, England placed a tax on bricks. Builders soon realized that they could use bigger bricks (and thus fewer bricks) to pay less tax. Soon after, the government caught on and placed a larger tax on bigger bricks.
Say this prayer with your family today:
“Dear God, thank you for choosing us! In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
Don’t forget to keep saying the Lord’s Prayer at noon.
